Color with me – Dreambirds from Sommarnatt

Yay for a color along! And even better, this time it’s in one part so no waiting for part two. Today we’ll tackle birds from Sommarnatt by Hanna Karlzon, using Derwent Inktense but really, you can use any water soluble pencils you have, Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer or student grades or anything, just find relatively similar shades. I’m also doing my hated black Posca background which you can skip or do with pencils instead, I’m dangerously low on my black Prisma that I prefer for such works so I grit my teeth and went with Posca. Also I didn’t force you to sit through all the Posca, just know it took two layers.

Anyway, here goes!

Stuff used:
Derwent Inktense (set of 72), Kuretake water brushes in sizes S and L, white Posca in size 3M, black Posca in size 3M and 5M, Faber-Castell Polychromos
Pencils listed in order of appearance. Feel free to use other pencils and/or replace some colorways entirely with something else you like

  • Black Posca, 3M and 5M for background
  • Dark Aquamarine
  • Teal Green
  • Mauve
  • Crimson
  • Cadmium Orange
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Sherbet Lemon
  • Kuretake water brush in size L
  • Kuretake water brush in size S
  • Dark Purple
  • Sepia Ink
  • Mustard
  • Neutral Grey
  • Faber-Castell Polychromos Dark Indigo
  • White Posca, 3M

As always, feel free to substitute anything and add more. I tend to keep to a rather limited palette at times so if you feel you want more, don’t be hindered by the tutorial to add more. You are more then welcome to skip the black background and leave it white or maybe do another color, dark purple would probably look just as amazeballs here.

End result:
dreambirds

Hope you had fun and we’ll meet again very very soon! I also got my Tidevarv today, if so, you’ll get a flip through tomorrow and we’ll definitely take it out for a spin together soon as well.
