Color with me – Mermaid from Sagor och Sägner, day three, finishing

Yay, time to finish the Mermaid girl! Today we’ll work on the fish, the background and bubbles and finishing touches, yep, tons of white dots again. Honestly, feel free to skip them if you don’t like them, I just tend to go a bit overboard with them just cause.

  • 30% Cool Grey
  • 10% Cool Grey

  • White Posca, size 3M

So here you have a chance to do a much better job at the background then I did. I don’t like to polish backgrounds too much, not my cup of tea and I think MY life is better spent coloring other things so I tend to like these rustic solutions. But seriously, if you like fiddling with backgrounds, do a smoother job if you prefer.

From one of the coloring groups I read a comment that sort of stuck with me. I don’t recall who it was or in which group but the gist of it was that this person wants to often quit coloring because he/she feels you have to be an artist and create super realistic results because everyone just keeps posting better and better images and you can’t just have fun. I understand the sentiment. But the more I thought about it, the more I’m convinced that my videos will remain as they are, I am not perfect, I’m not an artist and so what. I’m having fun being sloppy and careless here and there and not the most realistic apple on the tree, I hope you guys have fun as well, following along and not worrying about mistakes or what-have-you. It’s not about that, not at all. To me, this hobby is about having fun, not about creating great art that should be spotless and perfect. I hope I can get that across to you as well and not add to the pressure and stress all around.

Anyway. That aside, there are things in this image I’d work on some more, the teeth could use more contrast, deepen the black for instance and the bubbles could be better, you have the chance to polish and work on them more if you wish, I didn’t, I’m quite okay with the result as is. If you want the eyes to pop more, add some more orange and yellow to them, I liked the more subdued look this time.

And the end result:
sagorp3end

Hope you guys had a good time, I know I had a blast 🙂 I’ll see you next week with the next color along but I also have a book review for you before we do that so yay, stuff to wait for!

All parts of this tutorial:
